| The Black Canyon National Park is our nation's newest national park. The park takes in 14 miles of the Gunnison River flanked by sheer black walls of schist and gneiss. The canyon plummets as much as 2,700 feet along the 53-mile total stretch of narrow gorge known as the Black Canyon. The canyon has an average depth of 2,000 feet with steep trails that lead to the bottom along spectacular canyon scenery. The south side of the canyon is more developed with a visitors center and access from Montrose. The north side is more secluded and remote with the access road reached from near Crawford, and a fair portion of road being gravel. |
