Mesa Verde National Park is within an easy day's drive from Blue Mesa RV Ranch. There is so much to see there you should probably plan to spend at least a couple days if not more. Mesa Verde is one of the best preserved archaeological sites anywhere and a unique look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people. They made this area their home for over 700 years, from A.D. 600 to 1300.
The park is located in the mesa and canyon country of Southwestern Colorado, and covers over 80 square miles. There are over 4,000 archaeological sites and over 600 cliff dwellings of the Pueblo people at the site. There is a paved road into the park and to the visitors center. Self guided as well as guided tours are available. Because of the rich archaeological history this park protects access is a lot more limited and regulated. Still, the US Park Service does a remarkable job of showing so many people the park each year and making their experience enjoyable.
Mesa Verde and the close by Hovenweep National Park are "must see" destinations. The extent of the culture that once flourished here is truly amazing and gives some insights into our own culture.
